"The New Pop: Lumikide makes music that might be hard to define within genres."
After an exciting debut with 2014 single release Again, alt-pop quartet Lumikide have made an exuberant return to the thriving music scene of Bergen, showcasing their finest amalgamation of their jazz roots and pop wonderment in their first (self-titled) EP release.
The fluidity in Lumikide’s sound comes from their early kinship; jazz studies bringing founding members together before later forming and using their modern jazz techniques to create intricate compositions driven with (what the band describes as) somewhat ‘spontaneous’ and ‘unexpected’ delivery.
Apart from having derived much inspiration from local artists during the EP’s recording (with a genial glance to Cocteau Twins’ Heaven or Las Vegas as well), Lumikide have drawn much attention to the political environment of Norway through the record's inherent themes, particularly emotions of unrest. “Feelings of indignation and disappointment are consistently present for the entire EP, with a flicker of reconciliation here and there. Much of the themes revolve around authorities and the abuse of power; several of the tracks are specifically about the current (political) situation in Norway,” mentioned guitarist, Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne.
In conjunction with their debut release, Lumikide have also released an accompanying video to one of the four tracks on the EP (Again), which was directed by (and features video art from) Gunnbjörg Gunnarsdóttir.
Lumikide’s debut self-titled EP is available on digital and cassette from March 20th through Klangkollektivet.
